It follows from specific physics. A conventional compressor runs in only two states: fully loaded or idling. While idling it produces no air at all, yet still draws 20 to 30 percent of rated power.<\/p>\n<p>A variable speed drive machine adjusts motor speed to real demand, so it simply never goes into idle.
