Produced air is supplying metropolitan carriage brake systems, Pneumatic and electrified devices with compressed air.

As the metropolitan electric grid does not equip with 400 volt 50hz system, the IES-7.5 Compressor is implemented with Danfoss FC-302 inverter which converts DC power to AC power, which then feeds compressor with threefold 400 AC 50hz.

The challenge

A metro carriage braking system is pneumatic: the brakes and auxiliary mechanisms run on compressed air. Losing the air supply means pulling the train out of service, so the compressor here is not an auxiliary unit but a safety component.

The task was difficult twice over. The unit had to fit into the carriage’s existing space and run off the carriage’s DC on-board network, a supply that a standard industrial compressor cannot be connected to directly.

The solution — IES-7.5

IESCO designed, built and installed a dedicated screw compressor for the carriage: the IES-7.5. A screw block was chosen over a piston design because it is built for continuous duty, produces less vibration and lasts considerably longer on rolling stock.

The carriage’s on-board network is direct current, while the compressor motor needs three-phase alternating current. A Danfoss FC-302 variable frequency drive was therefore built into the system. It converts DC into 400 V / 50 Hz three-phase power and, at the same time, softens the starting current, which is critical for the carriage’s electrical system.

What the system includes

IES-7.5 screw compressor — designed and assembled by IESCO

Danfoss FC-302 variable frequency drive — DC to 3×400 V / 50 Hz

Control and protection panel

The result

Since 2016 these compressors have supplied compressed air to the carriages’ braking systems and to pneumatic and electro-pneumatic equipment. The project showed that a special-purpose industrial compressor can be designed and built in Georgia, without depending on a ready-made imported solution.

Have a similar challenge?

IESCO also delivers non-standard projects, from selection and design through installation, commissioning and service.
