In Sumgait, Azerbaijan, a joint project was implemented by Ekomak, a company within the multi-branding of world leader Atlas Copco, and the leading Georgian company IESco. Following an investment of 26,000,000 dollars, the production of glass bottles was established in Azerbaijan, where the main air supply system was set up with EKOMAK’s air screw compressors:
The challenge
In Sumgait, Azerbaijan, a new glass bottle plant was built with 26 million dollars of investment. A glass plant is one of the most demanding sites for compressed air: the forming machines consume air continuously and in large volumes, and a pressure drop translates directly into rejects.
The project was carried out jointly by EKOMAK, part of the Atlas Copco multibrand group, and IESCO.
The solution
- EKOMAK CD 132 screw compressor — 2 units
- EKOMAK CD 132 DVCT screw compressor with variable frequency drive — 1 unit
- Air dryer — 2 units
- Air blower — 2 units
Why two fixed-speed machines and one inverter machine
This is the classic and most efficient scheme for a large plant. The two fixed-speed machines cover the base, predictable load. They run fully loaded, where their efficiency is at its highest.
The inverter machine trims the peak. It adjusts motor speed to demand and delivers exactly the air needed at that moment. As a result the system avoids idle running, on which a conventional compressor still consumes 20 to 30 percent of rated power while producing no air at all.
The result
The plant received a stable, redundant air supply. Taking one machine out for service does not stop the line.
