A nitrogen generator with a capacity of 120 m3/h and 99.5% purity was installed at M-N Chemical Georgia. The nitrogen generator is designed to introduce carbon-substituting gas into the combustion chamber to prevent sudden ignition and the creation of an explosive environment.

The challenge
In chemical production nitrogen has a very different role than in the food industry: it is a safety measure. At MN Chemical Georgia, nitrogen is fed into the combustion chamber to prevent sudden ignition and the formation of an explosive atmosphere.
In a task like this an interruption in supply is unacceptable. A nitrogen shortage here is not a production problem but a safety problem.

Why it was specified this way
Every cubic metre of nitrogen requires roughly 3 to 5 m³ of compressed air. This is exactly why the compressor and the generator are sized together in a project, not separately. The EKO37CD, at 6.2 m³/min, is matched to feeding a 106 m³/h generator continuously.
A purity of 99.5% is optimal for inerting. It is sufficient to prevent the formation of an explosive mixture, while higher purity would demand significantly more energy for no additional benefit.
The result
The plant has its own uninterrupted nitrogen source for a safety-critical process, independent of delivery schedules and at a predictable cost.
