Where does a carbon tower sit in the compressed air system?
A carbon tower is installed after the dryer and the line filters — activated carbon only works on dry, mechanically clean air. Pre-filtration (at least 1 µm and 0.01 µm coalescing stages) is essential, because liquid oil and water block the carbon pores and cut its service life sharply. A dust filter is normally fitted downstream to catch fine carbon particles.
With correctly prepared air the carbon tower keeps the residual oil vapour content within ISO 8573-1 Class 1 — the requirement of food, pharmaceutical, medical and electronics production, where the air touches the product directly.
When should the activated carbon be replaced?
The adsorption capacity of activated carbon is finite and depends on the inlet air temperature, humidity and oil content: the higher the temperature, the faster the carbon saturates. Manufacturers recommend replacing the carbon fill by operating hours or on the signal of an oil vapour indicator. The IESCO service team checks the tower during scheduled maintenance and replaces the fill when needed.
