The challenge
At the Alazani winery in the village of Kardenakhi, Kakheti, a nitrogen system was installed to protect the wine from oxidation. For a small or medium cellar the main question is always the same: is a generator of your own worth it compared with cylinders?
The solution
A nitrogen generator system was installed and commissioned, including compressed air preparation, filtration and the nitrogen supply line.
How the benefit is calculated
The calculation is straightforward. The cellar counts how many cubic metres of nitrogen it uses per season, across tank blanketing, line purging and bottling. Cylinder nitrogen includes not only the gas but also cylinder rental, transport and the return of empties. With a generator of your own, the only running cost is electricity.
In a typical Georgian cellar that difference usually returns the investment within one to three years, and after that the nitrogen is effectively free. The second benefit, often the more important one, is independence of supply: at harvest peak the nitrogen never runs out.
The result
The producer gained an autonomous nitrogen source and a predictable cost. The cooperation, as we like to say, did not conclude without a glass of wine.
