That figure is not marketing. It follows from specific physics. A conventional compressor runs in only two states: fully loaded or idling. While idling it produces no air at all, yet still draws 20 to 30 percent of rated power.

A variable speed drive machine adjusts motor speed to real demand, so it simply never goes into idle. The second effect is in pressure: a fixed-speed system is forced to run 1 to 2 bar above what is needed in order to maintain its load-unload band, and every extra bar costs 6 to 7 percent in energy.
