These systems are a far more efficient and safer alternative to traditional oxygen cylinders. What is an oxygen generator?

An oxygen generator (oxygen concentrator) is a unit that separates oxygen from ordinary compressed air right on site. Atmospheric air is 21% oxygen and 78% nitrogen; PSA technology (Pressure Swing Adsorption) traps the nitrogen in zeolite molecular sieves and delivers 90–95% pure oxygen at the outlet — continuously, as long as the compressor supplies air. No cylinders, no cryogenic tanks, no delivery logistics.

One oxygen generator replaces hundreds of cylinders a year, and the plant no longer depends on a supplier — oxygen is produced when and in the quantity the process needs.

How does a PSA oxygen generator work?

The system consists of two adsorbers. Compressed, dried and filtered air enters the first adsorber: the zeolite holds back nitrogen, carbon dioxide and moisture, while oxygen passes into a buffer tank. While the first adsorber works, the second is depressurised and regenerated; after a few seconds they swap roles. The cycle is fully automatic and purity is monitored by a built-in oxygen analyser.

If you do not need purity above 99.5% (a rare requirement — even medicine uses 93%), a generator is almost always cheaper.

How to select an oxygen generator

1. Capacity (m³/h or l/min) — add up the oxygen consumption of all users in the peak hour and add a 20–30% reserve. IESCO's range covers models from 3 to 250 m³/h.

2. Purity (%) — 90–95% for industry, 93% ±3% for medical use. The higher the purity, the more compressed air and energy each m³ of oxygen requires.

3. Pressure — the generator delivers 4–7 bar; if you need 10+ bar or cylinder filling, an oxygen booster is added.

Frequently asked questions about oxygen generators

What purity does a PSA oxygen generator deliver?

Typically 90–95%; medical models deliver 93% ±3% (ISO 10083 / European Pharmacopoeia). The remainder is mostly argon, which passes through the zeolite together with oxygen. Purity above 99.5% is only achieved by cryogenic or special VPSA systems and is not needed by most processes.

How much compressed air does an oxygen generator consume?

About 10–14 m³ of compressed air (at 5–7 bar) per 1 m³ of 93% oxygen. That is why the compressor capacity is calculated together with the generator — IESCO does this calculation free of charge.

Can a generator supply a medical oxygen system?

Yes — medical PSA generators are built to ISO 7396-1 and ISO 10083, with a built-in oxygen analyser, a backup line and an alarm system. IESCO has installed such systems in several clinics in Georgia.
