What Class 0 means
ISO 8573-1 grades the oil content of compressed air into classes. Class 1 means 0.01 mg/m³; Class 0 is stricter still: there is practically no oil in the air, because no oil enters the compressor at all. Ingersoll Rand oil-free compressors are certified Class 0 by TÜV.
This is the difference between oil-free air and filtered air. On an oil-injected compressor a filter can saturate or be changed late. On an oil-free compressor the risk is eliminated by design. That is why food, pharmaceutical, electronics and medical production have no other option.

Every series is available air cooled or water cooled. Flow is stated to ISO 1217 at 7 bar.
Two technologies in one range
Water injected, single stage (E15-37H). Water instead of oil fills the gap between the rotors, cools them and seals the compression chamber. The result is oil-free air from a simple, compact machine, for small and medium plants.
Dry, two stage (Sierra, Nirvana, E and ES series). The rotors never touch, and there is neither oil nor water in the chamber. Air is compressed in two stages with intercooling between them. This is the industrial standard for high flow and 24/7 duty.
Energy: where the savings come from
Electricity is roughly 70 percent of a compressor’s lifetime cost. Ingersoll Rand attacks it in three ways:
- Variable speed (VSD). Nirvana and the “n” models adjust speed to actual demand. According to the manufacturer, savings against fixed speed reach 35 percent when load fluctuates.
- Permanent magnet motors and dual drive. In the “ne” series each stage has its own motor, with no gearbox, and the speed of each is controlled separately. The German-built airends of the ES series add roughly 12 percent on top.
- Heat recovery. On water cooled models the compressor’s heat is returned to the plant as 90 °C water.

Control and monitoring
The Xe-145, XePro180 and XS 255e controllers run the system automatically and, with several compressors, share the load between them. The Helix platform comes as standard on new compressors: remote monitoring, analysis of historical data and advance notice of maintenance.
Where it is used
Food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, electronics, chemicals, textiles, utilities. Anywhere compressed air is in direct contact with the product, the packaging or people. In medical oxygen systems an oil-free compressor is a mandatory link.
The system around the compressor
An oil-free compressor still delivers air with moisture and dust. For technically oil-free air to ISO class 1.2.0, Ingersoll Rand specifies a water separator, a desiccant dryer, an activated carbon tower and line filters downstream of the compressor. We build the whole chain to the requirement of your process.
